Chapter-IV

After that, Souryaayani – the one hailing from Garga family, asked the sage Pippalaada this: “O Sir! In this Purusha, what is it that is asleep? What is it that is awake in him? Of these, which deity or force sees the dreams? Whose is the happiness? In what is everything else stationed and established?”

To his question, the sage replied thus: “O Gaargya! In the same way that the rays of the Sun fold back into it during set and in the same way that they come out and enlighten the world during sunrise, all the senses fold back in to the mind during sleep. During that state of sleep, this Purusha does not hear, does not see, does not smell, does not taste, does not joke, does not speak, does not accept, does not enjoy, does not let go, does not walk, does not do anything. He is said to be in Sleep state.”

“In this body, only the fires of Praana are awake. Apaanan is the Gaarhapatya-agni, (the fire kept behind the performer) from which other fires are taken; Vyaanan is the Anvaahaaryapacanam or Dakshina-agni (the fire raised to the south of the performer in which Pitru and Kshutra devatas are positioned); Praanan is the Aahavaneeya-agni (the fire raised in front of the performer – in which the Devas are positioned) – since it is taken from the Apaanan.”

“The inhaling of breath (which is a sacrifice of Praanan in Apaanan) and the exhaling of breath (which is a sacrifice of Apaanan in the Praanan) are both controlled and performed with equality (saman) by the Samaanan. The mind is the owner (yajamaanan) of this sacrifice. Udaanan is the boon prayed for. This Udaanan only takes this mind closer to the Supreme on a daily basis (in the state of sleep, which is heavenly).”

“This mind enjoys his pride in the Dream. He sees all that which was seen by him (when he was awake). He hears all that which was heard by him. Whatever was enjoyed by him in various places and directions, he enjoys all that again and again (in his dreams). He becomes that One which is the seen and the unseen, which is the heard and unheard, the enjoyed and the not enjoyed, the present and the absent, and by becoming that, he sees all.”

“When he (the mind) is overpowered by the illumination (of knowledge), he does not see these dreams. During such illumined stage, this awakened state itself becomes very enjoyable for him.”

“O intelligent one ! How the birds flock back finally to their living place (the nest in the tree), in as much the same way, all the forces flock back and are positioned in the Atma (or the Supreme Being).”

“The earth and the five forces thereof, the water and the five forces thereof, the fire and the five forces thereof, the air and the five forces thereof, the space and the five forces thereof, the eyes and the being seen, the ears and the being heard, the nose and the being smelt, the taste (tongue) and the being tasted, the skin and the being felt, the mouth and the being spoken, the hands and the being taken, the genital and the being enjoyed, the seat and the being let-out, the legs and the being walked, the mind and the being thought, the intellect and the being known, the ego and the being proud of, the conscience and the being conscious of, the brilliance or majestic illumination (tejas) and the (things) being explained by it are all various aspects and manifestations of one and the same Atma or the Supreme Being.”

“Truly he (the Atma) is the one who sees, touches, hears, smells, tastes, thinks, knows, and does all things. He is also the Supreme Being. He is the one stationed in the immortal Supreme Being.”

“O intelligent one ! One who knows that Atman which is without the shadow (of ignorance), without a body, without (undesirable) qualities, which is pure as a clear crystal and immortal, he verily attains that immortal thing itself. He becomes the all-knowing one and he becomes all. On that there is the following verse.”

“O intelligent one ! One who knows the Atma, which resides in the cave of intelligence, along with all its illumine powers and forces and senses, to be stationed and positioned in that immortal and indelible thing, he becomes the all knowing one and he becomes the omni-present.”
